If you’ve not had chance to check out the Geek Pop 09 festival yet, I’d highly recommend you do as I’ve just done and point your favourite browser towards geekpop.podbean.com a check that shit out.
Tunes about science, some of which are played by scientists? Sounds great! The music ranges from the indie rocking, to the comic, right down to the just plain mathmatically inspired. Basically all the things we’d like for the Science Sessions.
Well done Geek Pop team! You must all be very proud.
… in which I decide to talk about the Science Session.
Hmmm, not sure if this made look like a) an interested and interesting scientist with a rounded interest and passion for public engagement, or b) a freak.
I really want that job too.
So, my best idea ever now has a name: The Science Sessions. It’s one I’ve been toying with for a while, and everyone knows that branding is the first thing to be sorted in any endeavour. What is doesn’t have is any sort of plan… So what do I need to do?
- Canvas friends and friends of friends (and friends of friends of friends) to see if it would be worth putting my efforts into organising anything.
- Formalise the format
- Book a venue, PA, etc…
- Book a star non-musical turn. In the perfect world this would be a scientifically literate/engaged comedian. In the ideal world it would be Ricky Gervais [edit, see comments], Robin Ince, Jose Long or Chris Addsion (do you know of any more?)
- Book bands (I think my band will be one)
- Promote it: online, in universities, listing site and pages.
- Run it
Sounds easy doesn’t it? I’m sure it’s not. Am I missing some thing? Are there any other obvious things I’m missing?
Guys, I mean GUYS!
I’ve just had the MOST badassed idea, you know how I’m all ways talking about a “Scientists in bands gig night”? (Sure you do, I’m always talking about it, but never doing anything.)
Well, I’ve just had an idea that will take it to the next freaking level: we run a night with scientists in bands AND non-scietists talking about sciency type things. It can be stand up, monologues, lectures or discussion sessions. They could do this, then we have some bands: either bands full of geeks, or non-geek bands that sing songs about geek topics, finsihed off with some DJing, maybe. It would act as a great way for normal people to engage with scientific thought, and with scientists for that matter.
This idea has just kept me up for an hour. It’s too exciting. I think we should make this happen. London must be ready for it. look at the succes of Robin Ince’s School for Gifted Children. This is such a good idea, I’m totally copywriting it here and now… You can do that right? Blog posts are legally binding, aren’t they?
